Located less than a kilometer off the coast of Plaridel in Misamis Occidental, Bawbawon Island’s incredible white sand and clear waters, framed with evergreen, offer a cinematic view for travelers seeking that seaside solace. The island gets its name from the local term “bawbawon” or “baobaoan,” which means “shallow” because of the shallow water that surrounds it. It is approximately 200 meters off a stunning coral reef on one side and near lush mangrove forests on the other. A dazzling array of wild bushes and coconut trees also shrouded the island.

This citadel was first built by Spanish Jesuit priest and commander Jose Ducos to serve as an outpost to protect the area against marauding pirates. It then became a Japanese garrison during World War II and was damaged during the April 1955 earthquake. It was faithfully restored to resemble the original structure and is now one of the only 14 forts remaining from the Spanish era in the Philippines.
The Cotta Fort is constructed out of coral stone and has four bastions, or baluartes, namely San Fernando, San Jose, Santiago, and San Ignacio. An image of the Virgin Mary is carved on the outer side of the Cotta’s wall and is believed by the locals to be growing in size.
Fuerte de La Concepcion y del Triunfo, or the Cotta Fort, is a worthy inclusion in pilgrimage travels, where a beautiful mix of history, religion, and culture has fortified not only its wall but also the faith of its devotees.

This century-old Spanish Catholic Church of Jimenez, also known as St. John the Baptist Church, is one of the Philippines’ oldest churches, located in the historic town of Jimenez, Misamis Occidental. This beautiful Baroque-style church has been declared a National Historical Treasure and has withstood the test of time for almost 140 years.
The old church altar, the pipe organ, the antique clock, and the unique church interiors have been well-preserved throughout the years, thanks to the joint effort of the local government and church officials. The fascinating paintings on the church’s ceiling, made by Spanish painters in the late 19th century, are a must-see for all visitors.

Nestled deep within Sitio Piduan, Barangay Napangan, at the heart of the Malindang Mountain Range, the 60-meter curtain-like Piduan Falls offers a mystical experience—its cool, crystal-clear waters are so pure they’re even safe to drink. Numerous hikers are drawn to the natural wonders and unspoiled beauty of Lake Duminagat’s fresh and pleasant setting. It also characterizes flora and fauna of the Zamboanga biogeographic region, which is located in Mt. Malindang Natural Park, one of the Philippines’ protected areas. Barangay Lake Duminagat and Barangay Gandawan are the two communities adjacent to it.

Asenso Ozamiz Wellness Park is a new attraction in Ozamiz City, Misamis Occidental which is located in front of ‘Birhen sa Cotta’ across Cotta Fort, two of the popular tourist attractions in the city.

Highlight your tour with a trek to the picturesque Caluya Shrine, featuring a 55-foot statue of Christ the Redeemer created by famous Mindanaoan artist Kublai Milan. Views from the Shrine at sunset are a must-see because this is the best time to capture the magnificent angles overlooking the bay with its flamboyant display of colors. A fitting end to the symphony of magical experiences in Sapang Dalaga is the bioluminescent plankton shining like stars in the water as the night falls, bidding us farewell.

The miraculous statue of Birhen sa Cotta was brought to the City in the 1700s. It was originally housed in the Cotta Fort and transferred to the Immaculate Concepcion Church. The image mysteriously disappeared in the 1970s.
In 2016, it was found in Manila by an antique collector and returned to Ozamiz on December 8, 2017, the feast of the Birhen sa Cotta, in an emotional homecoming attended by thousands of pilgrims. Birhen sa Cotta remains one of the most visited religious sites in Mindanao.
